More often than not, even the students avoided the library on campus. It was one of the oldest buildings, a little creepy, and had nothing to offer except books.
Which made it perfect for Pippin.
They went skipping through the aisles, looking homeless and aimless as they glanced at the titles of different books. They were in the science section, with two dusty old history books under one arm, but that didn't seem like enough for them. They were humming a tune, their eyes bright blue as they jumped from shelf to shelf.

'Knowledge is Power.'
An old, sometimes hypocritical saying, yet one she somewhat agreed with. Knowledge was one of the ways to power, and power is one of the ways to peace. When used correctly. A casually dressed (full suit, church flats with a tie), Janiya found herself in the macabre-looking library on campus looking to capitalize on the failures of the past.
Brushing her hair back as she walked past shelf after shelf, a book in her hand from the history section: The Art of War. She continued walking until stopping shy of someone humming. A fellow knowledge seeker or a lost student?
"What's up?" Janiya asked nicely leaning on the bookshelf, smiling as if she owned the place.

"Gas prices. The suicide rate in America. Birds and planes and things. And either a very angry floating man or a monster made of spaghetti.... I haven't decided which, yet."
They spoke without missing a beat, almost as if they expected the question all along... as if this were all part of some grand script, and they already knew what was going to happen. It was almost eerie... until they stood up and looked over at Janiya with their wide, bright eyes filled with... Well. Nothing.
They tilted their head as they waited for her response, an almost too wide smile stretching their face.

Janiya's friendly smile turned into a genuine smirk. She loved talking to people who knew what they were talking about, no fakeness in sight. Of course, fake folk couldn't be avoided, but it was a personal preference of hers for realness.
Walking closer with a hand in her pocket, she nodded.
"Yeah? A wide range of subjects. The latter sounds exciting... if there are such things existing." Her piercing blue eyes matched the gaze of... whatever vile smiling emptiness was staring back at her. It didn't unnerve her, no, not the eyes, but the smile got to her a bit so she didn't get too close. "You lost or a student or...?"

"Nope!" They clapped their hands together slightly and gave a single shake of their head, back and forth. They turned their attention back to the shelves nearest to them, scanning the titles of the books with sudden great interest.
"I just like it here."

"Good enough reason as any... not many people come over here. Everything's digital or Nen induced y'know?"
She watched them search for something on the shelf in silence before again speaking up, looking for common ground. "Ever read The Art of War?" Janiya asked curiously.

"Nope!" Again, their response was almost instant, as if they were just waiting for her to ask. Turning to face her once more, they glanced to the book she held before meeting her gaze, unflinching.
"I probably did, but I don't remember anything, really. So even if I have read it, I won't remember it, and it will be like reading it for the first time all over again!"

Staring blankly, she pondered. "Short term memory of sumthing like that?" Janiya asked. "Erm if that's too personal I understand. Just sounds more like a burden than something that's really useful."
Looking around quickly just in case they were under someone's care, she crossed her arms, attention fully on them. "Someone looking after you?"

"Hmm..." Pippin's head tilted slowly to one side as they contemplated that question. What was actually wrong with them? Was it short term memory loss? Some form of amnesia? Something else entirely? They realized that they hadn't actually thought about that, too much.
"Dunno!" They closed their eyes, head jerking upright, as they clasped their hands together in glee. "I guess I never really questioned it before!"
Was somebody looking after them? Well....

"I guess ignorance is bliss after all then huh..." Janiya giggled a little, remembering all the times she stressed about things that, in retrospect, didn't really matter before moving a little closer to them.
"Name's Janiya Isgrim, nice to meet you fellow bookworm! Actually I'm not a bookworm, now that I think about it. I just like history." Making a small globe construct with her Nen and spinning it on her finger, she smiled. "World history to be exact!"

"Which world?" They asked the question so suddenly, so quickly, and so insistently, that it was almost as if THAT question was.., it. The thing they had been waiting for, the entire reason for this encounter... There was a sudden heaviness to their question, like a thick blanket of importance draped along every word. When they moved, they did so with the suddenness of a snake striking. They were, in the blink of an eye, facing Janiya completely, leaning close to them with wide, burning eyes, as if the answer to this question would change the course of their entire life.
If Janiya looked closely enough, if she could see around their suddenly-way-too-close face, she would notice something quite strange indeed... and if she couldn't see it, maybe she would be able to feel it. Or, rather, not feel it.
Pippin stood there, almost nose to nose with this woman, and they weren't breathing. The length of time they held their breath was almost disturbing, and the fact that they did so without gasping the moment they inhaled was... startling. In between questions, there was that determined, maintained hallow in their chest, the press of their lips together, and the stillness of their nostrils. When they would go to speak, they'd breathe in deeply, fill their lungs, and by the time they were done with whatever they had to say.... They had used up all of their air.
Still, Pippin remained close to Janiya, and if she attempted to step back before answering the question, they would step forward in almost perfect unison, maintaining their closeness as long as they possibly could... at least until they got their answer.

"Eh?" Janiya quickly responded without giving it a second thought. The question completely caught her by surprise... an odd question for sure, but a valid one maybe? As she thought about it more, the more she was willing to admit the possibility of more than just this world existing. After all, her sibling always spoke of different worlds hosting things she only heard about in fairy tails... and then again, the things that Isgrim could do is a tall tale itself. "I guess... I think... for someone who has memory problems that's a deep simple question wouldn't you... say..."
Janiya looked up from her pondering only for the person they were talking to to be far closer than they were before, catching her by surprise again and making her jump. She was unnerved entirely. Movement that fast was something she was familiar with but not like this. She wanted to say something about it but only found herself staring in their eyes. Slowly, she gathered her composure again. As she stared, she felt something that... wasn't right. Her Nen was bothered, whatever it was it reminded her of other things that also irked her. Normal people, normal things that were off in some way. No, this wasn't normal. Normal people breathe, and this person, from what she could see, hasn't taken a breath in quite a bit.
Shaking her head in frustration, she laughed it off with a nervous smile, but kept staring. She wanted to take a step back from the situation- they were devilishly close- but at the same time she felt the urge to stay put. She felt like it wouldn't accomplish much. What danger was she in? She truly didn't know if this anticipating person was just a curious fellow or a carelessly dangerous one. They didn't answer her earlier, if they had a caretaker or guardian, maybe that was it...
"T-This one, and the afterlife too... it's where my sibling is, so it's the only two I know about..." She finally answered in a hushed voice, a bead of sweat running down her brow.

They continued to stare at her for a long, silent moment, letting it drag on for what felt like forever. The silence was consuming, eating up the casual day to day sounds until there was nothing left but the oppressive silence and the gleaming brightness of their eyes... a mesmerizing kaleidoscope of colors. Staring too long, being too close, had a strange effect on people. It was as if they were the only thing in the world... At least the world was beautiful.
And then, after enough time had passed that the numbness would have comfortably set in, just as suddenly as they slipped into Janiya's face.... they were sitting right back on an overstuffed, plush chair. Whether that had been there a few moments before or not was up for debate, but the way they collapsed back into it without even looking indicated that, if nothing else, they were VERY well aware of its presence. And exact location. They threw their booted feet up onto a matching ottoman and relaxed into the seat, arms tossed over the arms of the chair as they gazed up at their new friend.
That unearthly, hypnotic kaleidoscope was gone from their eyes. They looked... Well, as normal as somebody like them could ever look, anyway. They gazed up at the woman and reached up to twirl a colored lock of hair.
"The afterlife? Do you ever go to visit your sibling there?" they asked with a curious tilt of their head.

The silence was disturbing to her, but she couldn't find a way to break it the way she wanted to, so in silence she waited, azure eyes staring into a hypnotizing void of confusion given physical form. For a brief moment she considered the possibility of this person being some kind of witch or hypnotist or something.
As they fell back, Janiya's eyes widened as she prepared to attempt to catch her, to break her fall, but... was that chair always there? Was she really that unaware of her environment right now? Massaging her temple to again steady her thoughts, she cleared her throat.
It was clear they knew more than they were letting on; could do more than they were showing her right now. All of which pointed to Janiya keeping her guard up around them more so than before. Looking around for another chair and finding none, Janiya created her own soft chair out of Nen, placing it in front of the perplexing person, and fell on it. "Good plan sitting down," she said with a smile, "My legs were getting tired anyway."
Upon being asked the question, her demeanor instantly changed to a sour one. Her face twisted with a mix of sadness, disgust, and anger. The bean chair she just created, which was white in color, began to darken. She didn't even properly think about what she was just asked- visiting the afterlife- she was too focused on the visiting sibling part.
"No." Janiya answered, crossing her arms. "I... uhm. It's hard to talk about. I think he's on his way here to see me." Her gaze went from them to the ceiling.

"Oooo, on his way heeeeere you say..." Pippin mimed holding a pipe, so realistically it was almost as if they were actually holding an invisible pipe. They even went as far as to tap the invisible end of it against the cheek thoughtfully, like it was some great mystery and they were Sherlock Holmes. They crossed one long leg over the other, setting their foot down to make an odd triangle with their legs, and turned their gaze upwards. "Now, what on earth could they be visiting you for?"
It was a simple question asked by an obviously mad child, but there was something... almost innocent in their question. Their madness was a wild force, a power that - if left unharnessed could easily cause serious damage... if not outright destroy the world as people knew it. That madness, however, was often overlooked in favor of the way they asked questions, the childlike wonder and glee they got whenever somebody actually answered them. The rapid back and forth between monster and child was whiplash inducing... and simultaneously so natural, so RIGHT, so much so a part of them as a person... that it rarely raised any red flags.
They turned their bright gaze back to Janiya, dropping the pretense of their invisible pipe so they could lean forward, pressing their thin chest against their thigh and wrapping both arms around one leg. They rested their cheek against their knee to stare at her, almost affectionately. "It must be something pretty dang important. It's super easy for somebody from here to go there. Like, easier than getting a passport. But for one of them to come allllll the way here... that's like summer vay-cay to the Islands level of booked in advance, hassle travel, and all for a kinda 2 star experience... Not much of a vacation for them to come topside..."

Still disturbed, Janiya crossed her arms, loosening a few buttons on her shirt so she could breathe better. She looked at the seemingly innocent, childish person in front of her play detective. She briefly thought about making a pipe and hat, even. Looking at her bean seat she quickly changed her mind, attempting to change the color of it but failing miserably; it was stuck in an ugly shade of greyish blue and only getting darker, a nigh perfect reflection of her mental state right now.
Was she really this bothered, or was she concerned about the people that would get in the way of his agenda? People like her new friend and others she's met so far on her travels, those are people she absolutely has to protect... but was she powerful enough to do that? The logical thing to might be to leave him to another, more suited to the task, and focus on the collateral, aka, those that are forgotten about.
"God knows," Jani admitted, attempting a small smile as to not ruin the mood. It was clear to her that this person, this child even, they knew more than they were letting on, but Janiya didn't know whether that withholding of information was intentional... or couldn't be helped. It was dead certain that she'd have to treat them as her ally if not her friend if she ever wanted anything to go anywhere... "Nothin' good, knowing him. If he was... anyone else but him, you two'd get along I bet."
Janiya crossed one leg over the other, cradling her head in a hand attached to an arm resting on her raised leg. Her bean chair remained a dark, grim color but her mood was improving talking with someone so... indescribable, yet easygoing, chaotic yet friendly enough in their creepiness. Her smile slowly returned to a genuine, welcoming face. "Whatdoya mean it's hard for someone to come from there to here? He does it all the time, I just made the mistake of believing it was permanent... or maybe I made the mistake of believing it happened. You know a lot 'bout this stuff... hard to believe it's all from reading and such. Damn that memory thing sounds like hell."

Pippin couldn't help but giggle, raising a hand to hide their laughter behind long, spindly fingers. They looked a bit disproportionate in that moment, as if their limbs were longer than they were supposed to be... longer than they looked. When somebody was talking to Pippin, it wasn't particularly uncommon for their vision to begin to shrink and expand, to change the world around them as if they were looking into a mirror in a funhouse. It was a strange, subtle change that happened over the length of an entire conversation, or multiple, and lingered for a couple of hours after.... but even as it was happening, it was easy enough to understand that SOMETHING was weird, something was strange, but that was all. After some time, the effects just felt... normal.
They leaned forward slightly, the imagined pipe no longer held in their hand, and rested their arms against their knees. "This place, it's got stuff," they whispered, their eyes widening with the intensity of the secret they shared. They held up one hand to hide their lips from whatever onlookers may dare to be anywhere near them, in that moment. "Secret stuff... Stuffy stuff, you know?... Thaaaat kind of stuff."
The serious expression they wore made it obvious that whatever it was they were saying, it was actually very, wildly important, possibly the most important thing that Janiya would learn in her entire lifetime... or, perhaps it just seemed that way to the little child. They glanced from side to side, one lip twitching over their teeth, before leaning back to gaze over at Janiya again.
"It makes leaving here difficult. You'd have to have someone super strong, and even then, I dunno if the stuff would let them leave forever. Death, she's pretty strong. Super strong, even, like I was sayin'. But even Death can't keep people that are from here. Not for long." They shook their head from side to side to emphasize their point. "Then again... Maybe she will be able to when she grows up. She's just a little girl right now."

"You're weird but I love it. Make's you unique... but I can't lie sometimes you creep me out..." Janiya spoke as someway her eyes found themselves surveying them once again, moving from one part of their body to another, as if trying to find thin, fine broken lines on a sidewalk concrete. She continued to do this until she landed on her long, slender fingers- wait, no, fingers weren't supposed to be that long...
She rubbed her bright blue eyes with a hand in confusion... and her sight was back to normal. Squinting, Janiya took a deep breath in and out. "Maybe you're losing it Jani... what I wouldn't do for a skinny dip at the beach..." Trying to remain focused on their eyes, Janiya couldn't help but notice every once and awhile something totally off about something around her, sometimes being in the corner of her eye other times being right in front of her, but slowly she began not to mind it, notice less, care less... she was just imagining things. Right? Or were they always like this? Either way, she wasn't one to judge, instead she just smiled on.
"This place, it's got stuff,"
...What stuff? Janiya just stared on, quiet, wide eyed with the occasional absent nod. Secret stuffy stuff that... stuffs stuff? What? She leaned in all close, Nen suppressed, ears open as if the secrets of the universe was about to be told to her, but instead got... Stuff?!
"Yeah you lost me... but sure, yeah sure, the stuff, the good stuff, sounds stuffy enough- I mean simple enough. Your crazy's rubbing off on me...!" She exclaimed with a lighthearted chuckle. She decided not to pry, instead opting to remember their words just in case it came up later.
"Super strong huh... well isn't that swell- I'm sorry did you just say Death is a little girl right now? What the what? Never caught your name either-" Janiya instantly and abruptly stopped talking, her eyes widening even more. The bean bag she was sitting turning bright yellow, mirroring her shock and concern. Staring at them with newfound purpose, she began to incorrectly piece things together in her head. The weirdness... the strange semi-permanent visions... the speed... the memory issue... the knowledge they knew... their speech...
"Are you DEATH?! Holy shit it all makes sense... if Eszrai is Malice then it's possible right" She was having an internal breakdown. "YOU'RE HERE TO PUNISH ME FOR MY FAMILY'S CRIMES!- No, MY crimes!" With a reserved yet nagging finger, she pointed at them, shooting up to her feet. "While this is amazing I'm not ready yet... I'm still... Give me more time, there's still people in this world I have to protect!"

Pippin seemed totally content to let this stranger fall, slowly but consistently, into the gentle, loving embrace of insanity. They said paranoia is the first sign, that those that are losing their minds tend to start to turn things around in strange, unusual ways so they could blame something, suspect something, and have evidence that they were right. They had seen it, time and time again, as people spent more time around them. It was like a fun little journey that she got to go on, and they were invited along for the ride! It was so exciting.
They looked like they were about to start giggling as they realized where, exactly, this stranger's mind had gone.... until it hit them. All glee and excitement slowly began to melt off their face, leaving behind a sick sort nothing. It was an obvious mask, but what lie beneath it was a total mystery. It could be anything, especially given their personality.
Very, very quietly, they whispered, "Did... you just try to say... that I'm a little girl?"

Janiya was hyper focused on what she believed to be the female version of Death just chilling right in front of her; she heard every word as clearly as it were her own.
"Yeah sure did!" She said with absolutely no hesitation, adamant that she was right. To her, it made sense. Loosening her tie, her hands found their way straight to her hips as she continued to stare down "Death". "You don't gotta sugarcoat it or pretend anymore! I know you're Death! That explains why you don't have a guardian with you too..."
Janiya again paused, her breathing becoming more and more rapid. "It's Eszrai isn't it?!" At this point her voice was loud enough to be heard from across the block. "Listen here little girl you can't just go and do whatever the hell you want just because you can... well, do whatever you want! You hear?! I can't redeem Malice AND Death!"
She exhaled sharply as she finished her nagging, waiting for a response of approval from no one in particular. She still wasn't sure if she should be highly concerned for herself or deeply worried for the little one in front of her, and the beads of sweat that dripped down her face made that apparent. "Ugh... so much so fast."
